Chinese Medicine is both an art and a science. The ability to read and interpret the pulse and tongue are vital in this field of medicine. Both give an incredible amount of information about the internal environment of the body, usually more than the patient is aware of.
Acupuncture is just one of the many modalities of treatment used, and is the use of very fine filiform needles that are comparable to a hair in thickness. They are inserted at specific points on the body that elicit a specific reaction in the body.
In Chinese Medicine there are 12 main channels, or Meridians that follow the nervous system in the body. Essentially, acupuncture manipulates the nervous system by adjusting the “flow of qi” or energy. This flow of qi can be thought of as the neurotransmission by the nervous system in the body. The needles act as a conductor or switch, to move, sedate or tonify the qi.
Other therapies used in Chinese Medicine include Tui-na (a Chinese form of massage), Cupping, Moxabustion, Qi gong/Tai chi, auricular therapy, and counseling on diet and nutrition.
